Polar bears in the World

Have you ever seen Polar bears? It is the bear that lives in the pole. Maybe you have seen them on television advertisements if you watch television occasionally. I’m talking about Coca-Cola advertisements. There are white polar bears that are drinking Coca-Cola on the Arctic sea ice. I think not only me but also you want to see polar bears in reality. Actually, they don’t drink Coca-Cola, but their main food is ring seals. Normally, polar bears’ height is 8 to 10 feet and lifespan is about 20 to 25 years and male is bigger than female. They usually live in the North Pole and South Pole. I’m going to talk about the North Pole’s polar bear because all of the data talks about them. Today, they state that polar bears are listed as endangered animals and every year many polar bears are decreasing rapidly. Then, I know why they are declining after I read the articles. “There is a definite link between changes in the sea ice and the welfare of polar bears” (Heilprin, 2007, par. 6). It means if sea ice disappeared, polar bears also go forward to extinction. According to Heilprin (2007), global warming causes a problem by reducing sea ice. It will kill polar bears because they can’t swim continually. Another problem is human activity. polar bears were almost killed by hunters in the 1990’s (Terhune, 2007). Anyway, polar bears are one of the important species to maintain the ecosystem, so if they disappeared, the ecosystem will be broken fast. Diversity of species is very important, because it makes good environmental condition, so the government has to try to protect polar bears.

Humans should protect polar bears, because it is possible for them to do. Then, the government and people have to do something by reducing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases to preserve polar bears’ habitat, making habitats for polar bears such as zoos, and banning human’s destruction. In those ways, we should try to help and protect them.

First of all, humans should reduce carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases to protect polar bears’ habitat, because those gases are directly related with polar bears’ extinction. In other words, greenhouse gases are the main causes of making thinning sea ice. First of all, those gases cause global warming, so sea ice is melted. Then, polar bears lose their habitat. Next, those gases also bring problems, not only for polar bears but also for humans, because all organisms are related with each other. For instance, if polar bears are extinct, the sea ecosystem is destroyed, and then it makes humans worse. Finally, ice melting that is caused by greenhouse gases brings shortage of food for polar bears (Garfield, 2007), and polar bears only live in polar regions because they can’t swim for a long time in the ocean. It’s a big problem because the polar area is disappearing now. Actually, many polar bears are dead or rescued every year. Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases are mostly from humans, so we can help polar bears directly if we try to prevent greenhouse gases. Therefore, we should try to reduce those gases with appropriate counter-plans, and the government should encourage people to do that, especially encouraging public transportation to people.

Next, the government has to make habitats for polar bears because it can help polar bears that can be rescued. Above all, the government should help to make places at the zoo to take care of polar bears that lose their home, because the cost of making places for polar bears is too expensive. This plan is good not only for polar bear but also for humans, because people can see real polar bears if they want. Then, when we rescue polar bears that are in danger, we need a place for them. Only government can make a professional place easily. It’s a big deal for an individual. Also, the polar region is so small for polar bears because sea ice is melting rapidly. We should make an effort to help them because we destroyed sea ice indirectly that polar bears live in. If we don’t make a place for them, they will face a shortage of food. Furthermore, the ecosystem is destroyed because polar bears are one of the largest species. Thus, the government has to make shelters for polar bears and people also should help government to pursue it without problems.

Third, the government should protect polar bears from humans. Human is the largest factor to threaten polar bears. For example, in the 1990’s, many hunters killed polar bears, so they were in danger of extinction (Terhune, 2007). Polar bears’ leather is very expensive, so many people have caught them for their business. Also, there is a hunting season to hunt polar bear (Harding, 2007), even if there is trophy hunting. Actually, animal welfare and conservation groups protest trophy hunting by humans, but they need aid from the government. Also, economists think that economy is more important than environment, so there are many rash developments. For instance, people break sea ice just for their business, especially to get water and to make a sea route. Also, some companies extract drinking water from sea ice or glaciers. These developments will make sea ice become less stable. Thus, the government should prohibit human’s activity right now. Specially, the government has to make a punishment to save polar bear from rash hunting. Nowadays, the government can encourage citizens, so they have to prohibit rash hunts and developments. If the government tries to prevent that, the positive result will break out soon.

My opponents argue that this extinction crisis of polar bears is a natural phenomenon. They also say that greenhouse effect isn’t dangerous and it’s natural with short-term records. However, it will cause bad results and it’s not natural but clearly destruction of ecosystem. Polar bears occupy big parts of the ecosystem, so if they disappear, many other species can get critical damage. Then, the greenhouse effect will destroy the Arctic sea ice and polar bears will be dead. Then, it also causes many big problems, even if it affects humans. Actually, the sea level rising is one of the biggest problems. It can hurt humans directly. Although it looks like a natural situation, it’s a very serious problem. “Only a third of the world’s polar bears may be left within 50 years because of thinning ice from global warming in the Arctic” (Heilprin, 2007, par. 1). It’s too fast reduction, and polar bears’ reduction is related with many things. Therefore, the government and people should try to make sense of this dangerous situation. Then, we have to make moderate methods to protect them.

In conclusion, humans have to know how dangerous it is and try to protect polar bears with those three ways. In other words, we save polar energy by decreasing harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, establishing habitats for polar bears, and prohibiting human’s rash developments. As a result, we have to protect polar bear in danger if we don’t want to make big problems. Also, we should try to make other methods to protect polar bears continually. It’s not only for polar bears but also for humans. Of course, I don’t know what results will come, but we have to try many ways to save polar bears.

Practice Final Exam Wal-Mart

When I went to Wal-Mart at my first time, I was surprised about its huge size. Also, there are many people that buy many items. I think that Wal-Mart makes a lot of money because there are so many goods, so many people don’t need to find other markets. According to E. Locke (2004, par. 4), “Wal-Mart is one of the most impressive success stories in the history of business”. It shows that Wal-Mart is a great company. However, on the other side, there are also many serious problems. Actually, Wal-Mart is promoting to build a new market in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area. I think that promotion has to be stopped because it will bring many problems, so the government has to regulate this promotion. Also, the government should recognize Wal-Mart’s business way and control the market to allow flexibility. Finally, the government has to make solutions about Wal-Mart’s monopoly, abusing land and money, and hiring problems when Wal-Mart builds a market in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area.

First of all, we should regulate Wal-Mart’s plan, because it will bring a monopoly. If Wal-Mart builds a store in Carbondale-Murphysboro, many small stores must be closed, because those towns are too small and their population is also small. Usually, a store needs a flow of population for their business to succeed, so they can’t maintain their store because of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is too selfish in the market. Actually, Wal-Mart’s fast increment of their market has made hundreds of closed stores in the U.S. (Wal Mart site, 2002). Thus, the government should stop their monopoly if we want to develop our economy.

Second, the government has to stop the new store because they can abuse land. Actually, they need big land and much money to make their store, but the Carbondale-Murphysboro area has only grassland and forest. Thus, if they make a store, they should destroy the environment; also, it’s too expensive to build a store, especially since they already have a market in each town. It’s too selfish and wasteful, so the government has to prohibit their thoughtless business.

Third, there are employment problems, so we have to make them change their hiring way. First, there is sexual discrimination. According to R. Drogin (2003, p. 10), “Women comprise 92% of Wal-Mart’s cashiers, but only 33% of its managers”. I think if Wal-Mart succeeds in making one more store, there will be many protests about their sexism. Another problem is that Wal-Mart doesn’t guarantee their employee’s living, although they have 1.3 million US employees (UFCWIU, 2005). I think that Wal-Mart is too immoral, so the government must change and control their hiring way.

My opponents say that Wal-Mart brings development of Carbondale-Murphysboro’s economy, but it is for a short time. Too many Wal-Marts must be a serious problem later, because the amount of trade will be decreased, so Wal-Mart monopolizes a market, and there is no diversity of products. For example, in Carbondale, all my friends must use the same light in their house. Because of those reasons, the government should restrict Wal-Mart’s business.

In conclusion, the government should try to prohibit Wal-Mart’s imprudent policy, because Wal-Mart can be a monopoly, waste resources, and use wrong hiring ways. We can be consumers of Wal-Mart, so we try to use many kinds of store to improve our economy. Also, Carbondale and Murphysboro are little towns, so they can be wounded easily. As a result, the government has to help the local economy by protecting it from Wal-Mart’s rash business policy.

Polar bears Summary response #2

In Terhune's (2007) article entitled "Polar Bears Face Serious Threat; But scientists say there is time to save them, and the polar ice caps," the author of the article mentions that polar bears are located in a critical situation of extinction, yet we have enough time to recover this situation. In the article, first, she says that Arctic sea ice where polar bears live is melting rapidly. Then, polar bears' extinction causes the changing of the ecosystem to worse. Also, she explains how polar bears' number is decreasing according to many investigations. Next, she refers to climate's changing. She thinks it makes polar bears extinct, because it affects polar bears' habitat. Then, she tells more examples which more examples of bad effects of global warming. According to this article, the author thinks we can save polar bears if we make countermeasures fast. As a result, she wants everyone to recognize this problem and the government should make a method to solve this problem.

Although this article is similar to my first essay's article, i could understand about polar bear easier, because this article has many good explanations about investigation. I think that polar bears are in a dangerous situation because of ice melting. Then, ice melting is caused by climate changing. Actually, the climate is related to global warming. Finally, we aren't too late to protect the polar bear yet, and prevent global warming, because it causes polar bears' extinction. Therefore, we have to make this problem better by reducing greenhouse gases, resulting human activity, and continuing investigation

First, the government has to make a law to reduce greenhouse gases because greenhouse gases are dangerous to polar bears. If government doesn't make any laws to prevent emissions of greenhouse gases, nobody is going to take any action. Greenhouse gas is very critical for polar bears because it makes temperature go up rapidly. Then, this climate makes the Arctic sea ice melt, and polar bears lose their habitat. Greenhouse gas has been a serious problem for a long time, many countries have tried to reduce it, but actually we haven't found any good results. For instance, many presidents have gathered and made conferences. Therefore the government should try more to make new methods to decrease greenhouse gases.

Second, the government should prohibit excessive human activity such as development, because it can threaten polar bears. Today, the world is an industrial society, so we can't avoid a lot of gas and smoke. Nevertheless, people want to develop more and more. Thus, it would be big problem. Also, humans invade Arctic sea ice and extract ice and hunt polar bears. Both of them will give damage to the polar bear. For example, in the 20th century, many hunters killed polar bears and polar bears were recorded as endangered animals. Now, polar bears can't live well because the quantity of sea ice is reducing every day. For instance, i saw a picture in which a polar bear grabbed a small ice floe yesterday. It,s an amazing and horrible picture. In the end, the government must be concerned about human activity. If the government doesn't do that, polar bears will be extinct without delay.

Third, researchers have to keep studying about protecting polar bears. Even though there are no good consequences yet, we should keep going because this problem is not for only polar bears but also for humans. Also, the government needs to researchers continually, because this study requires a lot of money. If we stop studying this, we can't solve this problem clearly. Maybe we always make a temporary expedient. As a result, we need to study to save polar bears. For example, some developed countries have made good institution for protecting polar bears.

In conclusion, we have to do those three things to save polar bears. I don't know what result will come, but we should make an effort. If we allow this dangerous situation, we will get a serious problem, too. Therefore, not only the government but also people have to have a mind to reduce greenhouse gases, to control human activity, and to continue investigation in order to shield polar bears.

Polar bear Summary response#1

In Heilprin's (2007) article entitled "Polar bear population to drop by two-thirds by 2050, scientist say" he states that polar bear will be extinct because of global warming and humans, with using quotes from others. The most important reason is sea ice, because sea ice is decreasing rapidly now. Actually, polar bears live on Arctic ice, so it removes their habitat. For example, polar bears hunt seals not on land or in open water but on sea ice. Therefore, if ice melts continually, they can't hunt or breed. They are apt to be extinct in the world. Although, in this article, this situation is clearly horrible, now there is still time to save polar bears. It says we have to respond rapidly to reverse the causes of global warming. Finally, the author points out that global warming and human's actions are going to eliminate polar bears, because global warming leads to melting sea ice and pollution and humans kill them. Also, he states that we need responses to prevent global warming and change humans’ actions.

This article talks about endangered animal, especially polar bear. Also, he states it is related with global warming and human. I think the author uses quotation very well because he helps me to understand the article easily. For instance, I know that polar bears are in dangerous situation, because he gives many examples in the article. Then, I also think global warming and human's action cause serious problems not only for polar bears but also for most animals. Therefore, I'm going to talk about how global warming and humans affect polar bears' lives because it is a very important problem to the ecosystem. We are also in danger if we don't know what a horrible problem it is.

First, global warming melts sea ice because global warming makes temperatures go up and ice melt. Polar bears can't live on land or open water, so they will disappear. Also, they can breed only on sea ice because they usually hunt seal on ice. If there is no ice, they don't know hoe to hunt, and if they can adjust their life to a changed place, they will need a lot of time. Global warming is going to change climate warmer, so polar bears go up to parts of the poles. It can cause saturation, because there will be many polar bears in a small place and also there are few seals for them. Therefore, we have to stop global warming to protect polar bears.

Second, the government should make a law to prohibit hunting polar bears. Hunting polar bears is one of the problems because some hunters hunt them for their economic profit and just for fun. I think those people have to get punishment, because polar bear is not a common animal. If people hunt a lot, polar bears will move to the center of the polar area. It also causes the same situation as my first opinion. Actually, we don't need to hunt them because there are many animals which we can hunt in the world.

Third, these days, humans always try to develop their lives. It is one problem that threatens polar bear. Actually, many companies and countries destroy Arctic sea ice, because of their business, so polar bears lose their habitat. For instance, some countries destroy sea ice to make a route for their ship. Then, many countries make camps on Arctic sea ice to investigate something in that place, and want to go to the Arctic. Those explorers want to go to the Arctic. Those camps can pollute that place easily because they throw away many wastes. Polar bears can get damage because of them. For example, polar bears avoid people if people try to catch them for their investigation. Then, they can't live freely in their habitat.

In conclusion, government should make sure methods to take care of them. Specially, we should try to reduce greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide, because these gases are the big problem of global warming. Then, government has to prohibit heartless development and hunting. If we can stop those problems, polar bears will increase and the ecosystem will be better. Therefore, we have to think about this problem continually and act to protect polar bears as soon as possible.

Practice S/R Global Warming

In Bhattacharya's (2004) article entitled "Global warming threatens millions of species," she mentions that global warming makes natural conditions worse, such as extinction of organisms and changing climate. Then, habitat destruction, invasion by alien species, and overexploitation by humans result from changing climate and result in extinction. Those studies state the possibility of making less damage. The author disagrees with those studies, because she thinks many species are slipping into extinction. Actually, she also doesn't want to harm the ecosystem with other opinions. She is concerned about how to prevent global warming. In other words, she argues we have to not try to reduce damage, but prevent global warming. As a result, she says we have to try to stop causing global warming.

Her argument is very logical, so preventing global warming is more important than reducing harmful results. Then, in the first part of the article, she explains the danger of global warming well. If we don't try to prevent global warming, we will get many serious problems. Thus, every person should the try to prevent global warming, and also we have to know what causes global warming. Then, the government has to encourage citizens to try cutting emissions of greenhouse gases, employing new energy, and employing efficient technologies.

First, reducing the quantity of greenhouse gas is a good way to prevent global warming. Actually, we emit a lot of greenhouse gas every day because we live in an industrial world. If we don't use gasoline cars, it is good to reduce greenhouse gas because cars make too much an carbon dioxide. This gas plays a big role in making global warming. For instance, an area which has many companies is hotter than the countryside or an island, even if they have the same latitude. The government should make a law to reduce greenhouse gas, expecially mass transportation.

Second, inventing new energy is also good for us. It is not only preventing global warming but also improving our life. In these days, many people try to make a new energy because we are in a shortage of energy resources. Nowadays energy is harmful for global warming, so we have to invent natural forms of energy. Thus, government has to help people who try to make new energy such as diesel and solar power.

Finally, inventing new technologies is also good to prevent global warming. Today, most people use gasoline cars. If we invent cars which have new technology to prevent global warming, we can reduce our problem. Also we can invent another thing, especially machines which ren on natural energy. Finally, we have to make new technologies as soon as possible.

In conclusion, we must try to do all of these, because global warming causes such big problems such as extinction of animals and plants. Then, sea levels will rise and many islands will disappear if global warming keeps going. Finally, humans will get many risks like diseases. Therefore, we should prevent global warming by cutting emissions of greenhouse gases, inventing new technology, and exploiting new technologies.
